History[edit]

Tjark Auerbach and a colleague set up his first information technology business in Tettnang: H+BEDV, in 1986. The letters H and B stand for Hannelore Auerbach and Betty, the wives of the two founders.[3]
In 1988 H+BEDV Datentechnik released its first antivirus scan engine named AntiVir (formally named "Luke Filewalker" referring to Luke Skywalker).[3]
In 1990 Auerbach, along with Martin Ritter and Norbert Huth, converted the company into a GmbH with six employees.[3]
In 2006 H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH and its sister company AntiVir PersonalProducts GmbH and Avira GmbH merged into the company named Avira GmbH. The product kept the name AntiVir.[4]
On 17 October 2008, a major update to the scan engine was released, which increased scanning speed by 20%.[5]
On 12 June 2013, Avira announced that Travis Witteveen replaced Auerbach as CEO effective July. Auerbach remained as the majority shareholder.[6]
