Worlds Biggest and Most Expensive Ship (Oasis of the Seas)



MS Oasis of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship in the fleet of Royal Caribbean International. The first of her class, she was joined by her sister ship Allure of the Seas in December 2010. Both vessels cruise the Caribbean from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She set a new record of carrying over 6,000 passengers.

The ship surpasses the Freedom-class cruise ships (also owned by Royal Caribbean) as the largest cruise ship in the world.[15] She has, however, since been surpassed by her sister ship MS Allure of the Seas, which is 2 inches (51 mm) longer, although this difference may have been caused by the temperature of the ship at the time.MS Oasis of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship in the fleet of Royal Caribbean International. History

The vessel was ordered in February 2006 and designed under the name "Project Genesis". Her keel was laid down on 12 November 2007 at STX Europe - a subsidiary of the South Korean industrial chaebol STX Corporation - (formerly Aker Yards) in Turku, Finland. The company announced that full funding for Oasis of the Seas was secured on 15 April 2009.[17]

The name Oasis of the Seas resulted from a competition held in May 2008.[18]

During the first float-out of the vessel the tugboats that were pulling the ship from its dock failed to control the ship, resulting in the port side of the ship colliding with the dock. This resulted in some cosmetic damage and minor damage to the hull, which was repaired and did not affect the final delivery date of the vessel.[19]

The ship was completed and turned over to Royal Caribbean on 28 October 2009. Two days later, she departed Finland for the United States. While exiting the Baltic Sea, the vessel passed underneath the Great Belt Fixed Link in Denmark on 1 November 2009. The bridge has a clearance of 65 m (213 ft) above the water; Oasis normally has an air draft of 72 m (236 ft). The passage under the bridge was possible due to retraction of the telescoping funnels, and an additional 30 cm (12 in) was gained by the squat effect whereby vessels traveling at speed in a shallow channel will be drawn deeper into the water.[20] Approaching the bridge at 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph), the ship passed under it with less than 2 feet (60 cm) of clearance.

Proceeding through the English Channel, Oasis stopped briefly in the Solent so that 300 shipyard workers who were on board doing finishing work could disembark, then left on the way to her intended home port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[21] The ship arrived there on 13 November 2009, where tropical plants were installed prior to some introductory trips and her maiden voyage on 5 December 2009.

While Royal Caribbean's chief of captains William S. Wright was in command of the ship's journey across the Atlantic and also for the first few sailings, navigation of the Oasis of the Seas is regularly handled by Trym Selvag and Thore Thorolvsen. The ship was featured in an episode of the third season of Mighty Ships,[22] a production of Discovery Channel Canada which aired during the spring of 2011.[23]

Oasis had a minor refit in winter 2011, adding the DreamWorks Experience which allows passengers to interact with characters, such as Shrek, on board the ship. The Oasis class also now features 3D movies. Oasis is scheduled to enter drydock in Spring 2014.

Technical Details

The gross tonnage of the Oasis of the Seas is 225,282.[1][24] Her displacement—the actual mass of the vessel—is estimated at approximately 100,000 metric tons, slightly less than that of an American Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.[25][26]

To keep the ship stable without increasing the draft excessively, the designers created a wide hull. About 30 feet (9 m) of the ship sits beneath the water, a small percentage of the ship's overall height. Wide, shallow ships such as this tend to be "snappy", meaning that they can snap back upright after a wave has passed, which can be uncomfortable. This effect, however, is mitigated by the vessel's large size.[27] The cruise ship's officers were pleased with the ship's stability and performance during the transatlantic crossing, when the vessel, in order to allow finishing work to go on, slowed and changed course in the face of winds "almost up to hurricane force" and seas in excess of 40 feet (12 m).[28][29]

While the design length of the Allure of the Seas is the same as that of her sister, she is actually about 2 inches longer than the Oasis of the Seas. According to the shipyard, this is not intentional and such small differences in length may occur simply due to the temperature of the steel in a ship as big as this.[16]

The ship's power comes from six medium speed marine diesel generating sets, three 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 16V46D common rail engines producing 18,860 kilowatts (25,290 hp) each and three similar 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 12V46 engines each producing 13,860 kilowatts (18,590 hp). The fuel consumption of the main engines is 1,377 gallons of fuel oil per engine per hour for the 16-cylinder engines and 1,033 gallons per hour per engine for the 12-cylinder engines at full power.[8][30] The total output of these prime movers, some 97,020 kilowatts (130,110 hp), is converted to electricity, used in hotel power for operation of the lights, elevators, electronics, galleys, water treatment plant, and all of the other systems used on the operation of the vessel, as well as propulsion. Propulsion is provided by three 20,000-kilowatt (26,800 hp) Azipods, ABB's brand of electric azimuth thrusters. These pods, suspended under the stern, contain electric motors driving 20-foot (6 m) propellers.[8] Because they are rotatable, no rudders are needed to steer the ship. Docking is assisted by four 5,500-kilowatt (7,380 hp) transverse bow thrusters.[10][30]

The ship carries 18 lifeboats that hold 370 people each, for a total of 6,660 people. Inflatable life rafts provide for additional passengers and crew.[31]

Amenities

Oasis of the Seas offers passengers features such as two-story loft suites and luxury suites measuring 1,600 sq ft (150 m2) with balconies overlooking the sea or promenades. The ship features a zip-line, a casino,[32] a mini-golf course, multiple night clubs, several bars and lounges, a karaoke club, comedy club, five swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts, theme parks and nurseries for children.[33] Many of the ship's interiors were extensively decorated by muralist Clarissa Parish.[34]

Onboard recreational, athletic, and entertainment activities are organized into seven themed areas called "neighborhoods",[35][36] a concept which bears resemblance to theme park planning.[12]

   1. Central Park features boutiques, restaurants and bars, including access to the Rising Tide bar,[12] which can be raised or lowered between three decks.[33][32] It has the first living park at sea with over 12,000 plants and 56 trees.[33][37]
   2. The Pool and Sports Zone features a sloped-entry beach pool and two surf simulators.[12]
   3. Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center features a spa for teens.[12]
   4. Boardwalk features a handcrafted carousel,[12][15] restaurants, bars, shops, two rock-climbing walls, and a temporary tattoo parlor.[8] Its outdoor 750-seat[33] AquaTheatre amphitheater hosts the ship's largest freshwater pool.[15]
   5. Royal Promenade features restaurants and shops and is viewable from a mezzanine.[8][12]
   6. Youth Zone features a science lab and computer gaming.[37]

Naming Ceremony and Launch Party

The ship was formally named on 30 November 2009 during a charity sailing for Make a Wish Foundation. At this ceremony the ship was sponsored by seven "godmothers", each representing one of the seven neighbourhoods on board. The godmothers were Gloria Estefan, Michelle Kwan, Dara Torres, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Shawn Johnson, Jane Seymour and Daisy Fuentes.[38]

On 1 December 2009, a four-night pre-inaugural sailing began from Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, calling at Labadee in Haiti (3 December) and returning to Port Everglades, before the ship left Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on 5 December 2009 on its maiden voyage, calling at (8 December) St. Thomas, (9 December) St. Maarten, and (11 December) Nassau.

What Is the Smallest Planet In the Solar System?


The smallest planet in the solar system is the planet Mercury.

Also the closest planet to the sun, Mercury is about 20 times smaller than Earth and orbits the Sun once every 87.969 Earth days.
Although bright, Mercury is not easily seen from Earth as it is normally lost in the glare of the Sun. The first spacecraft to visit the planet was Mariner 10 in 1974.
Mercury has no moon, no atmosphere and its surface looks very similar to our moon with lots of craters. It is also the densest planet in the solar system because Mercury’s core contains more iron than any of the other planets.
One theory to explain this suggests that most of the surface rock on Mercury was vaporized when the Sun was formed.
Because of the large amount of iron in its core, Mercury has a very strong magnetic field which is powerful enough to deflect the solar wind around the planet, creating a magnetosphere.
Here’s a bonus factoid; Pluto used to be the smallest planet in the solar system until it was no longer classified as a planet in 2006.

Who Invented Chocolate and Where Does Chocolate Come From?


Chocolate comes from the cacao tree which has been cultivated since 1100 BC in Mexico, Central and South America.

We now know that the Aztecs made chocolate beverages called xocolātl, which means “bitter water” in Nahuatl. Chocolate was used in Maya and Aztec royal and religious rituals, and the oldest known cultivation of cacao was discovered at a site in Puerto Escondido, Honduras.
Chocolate was an important luxury good throughout the Aztec empire, and cocoa beans were even used as currency because cacao could not be grown locally.
Eventually, Chocolate drinks were introduced in Europe in the 16th century, and the Europeans added cane sugar to counteract the natural bitterness. It was served cold and became very popular in Spain after the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs.
In the 1800s, chocolate in solid form was invented, and the British family Fry claims to have marketed the first ever solid chocolate bar in 1846.
During the Industrial Revolution, mechanical mills were created that squeezed out cocoa butter, which helped simply mass production of chocolate. Many people contributed to the modern Chocolate making process including van Houten, Henri Nestlé, and Daniel Peter who first used milk powder to create the first milk chocolate in 1875.
These days, most of the global supply of cocoa comes from Western Africa and South America.
Besides being scrumptious, many people believe that Chocolate has health benefits because of the antioxidants it contains, and that’s a bonus if you’re a fan of the dark stuff.

Who Invented the Computer Device Called a Mouse and When?



The mouse is a great piece of technology many of us use everyday, and was destined for cuteness, not boring drivel.
It was invented in the late 1960s by Douglas Engelbart, and was called the “XY Position Indicator for a Display System.” It was a catchy name, but early users quickly came up with a nickname of their own: “turtle.”
The animal motif continued with the more accurate description, “rodent,” that followed.
With its long hairless tail, the little pointer device resembled any number of creatures in the order Rodentia, and these early technogeeks didn’t want to discriminate.
However, good sense and a desire to sell to consumers took over, and the name was changed to “mouse,” which stuck permanently. In every dictionary on our shelves we found mouse, which reads like this Merriam-Webster Dictionary on-line entry:
“mouse: a small mobile manual device that controls movement of the cursor and selection of functions on a computer display.”

Who Invented the First Computer Mouse and How Did It Get Its Name?


The first computer mouse was given its name by the device’s inventor, Douglas Engelbart.
Because, for some reason, the “X-Y Position Indicator for a Display System” just didn’t catch on.
The first users hated the clumsiness of the name and quickly dubbed them “turtles,” which eventually became “rodent,” which morphed into the cuter-sounding “mouse.”

What Was Considered a Computer Before the Electronic Age and How Much Did It Cost?


The word computer first appeared in the seventeenth century as the job title of a person who did calculations as an occupation.

Most human computers weren’t paid very much, just like the Information Technology workers of today, even though their job descriptions are slightly different.
Although slide rules were sometimes called computers, it wasn’t until the 1940s, with the development of massive electronic data machines, that the human occupation of computing became obsolete.
These mechanical devices became known as computers.

How Was the Computer Invented and When?


Imagine the world without computers. You’d have no internet to help you with your homework, and just think of all that post, photocopying and filing.
The first computer was invented in 1834, long before TV, telephones and even electricity. The inventor, Charles Babbage, called his computer the Difference Engine. It was essentially a calculator and since there was no electricity, it was mechanical. And very complicated.
In fact he never quite managed to finish it. Babbage spent a further 37 years designing the Analytical Engine, a pre-cursor to the first working general-purpose computers.
Computers really got going in the 20th century: Konrad Zuse’s Z3 was the first programmable computer, invented in 1941.
The Colossus computer was the first completely electronic computer. It was used to crack German codes during the Second World War.
By the end of the 1950s computers had become smaller and cheaper. (They were still about the size of a double-decker bus, though.)
Microprocessors, programmable components measuring just a few millimetres, were invented by Intel employee Ted Hoff in 1971. Just one of them was as powerful as the huge 30-tonne computers of the 1940s.
By the 1980s computers were small and cheap enough for individuals to buy and use at home. And today, computers are everywhere and most modern electronic devices, from washing machines to cars, contain one.
Finished Engine: Although Charles Babbage never completed the Difference Engine himself, the Science Museum in London did manage to build one in 1991, to mark the 200th anniversary of Babbage’s birth. And it worked!
Computers have taken over almost all aspects of our lives, from schoolwork and homework to keeping in touch with your friends. But not so long ago computers didn’t even exist.

Who Invented the First Computer?



The answer to this question depends of your definition of a computer.
The first known counting devices or tools were Tally Sticks from about 35,000 BC.
The Abacus was then invented by the Babylonians in 2400 BC.
In 1837, Charles Babbage, a British professor of mathematics described his idea for the Analytical Engine, the first stored-program mechanical computer. The Analytical Engine was designed to be powered by a steam engine and was to use Punched Cards, which was used to program mechanical looms at the time.
What made the Analytical Engine unique was that it was designed to be programmed.
It was because of this and the fact that it would be more than 100 years that any similar devices would be constructed, Charles Babbage, would be considered by many as the “father of computing”. Because of legal, financial, and political obstacles, the Analytical Machine would never be completed. Charles Babbage was also difficult to work with and alienated the supporters of his work.
In 1939, John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry developed the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) at Iowa State University, which was regarded as the first electronic digital computer. The ABC was built by hand and the design used over 300 Vacuum Tubes and had capacitors fixed in a mechanically rotating drum for memory.
The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), constructed in the US in 1943, is widely regarded as the first functionally useful electronic general-purpose computer. Influenced by the ABC, it was a turning point in the history of computing and was used to perform ballistics trajectory calculations and used 160 kW of power. World War II is known to be the driving force of computing hardware development and one of such use of computers was in communications encryption and decryption.
The UNIVAC I (Universal Automatic Computer) was the first commercially available, “mass produced” electronic computer manufactured by Remington Rand in the USA and was delivered to the US Census Bureau in June 1951. It used 5,200 vacuum tubes and consumed 125 kW of power. 46 machines were sold at more than $1 million each.
The microprocessor eventually led to the development of the microcomputer, small, low-cost computers that individuals and small businesses could afford.
By the 1990s, the microcomputer or Personal Computer (PC) became a common household appliance, and became even more widespread with the advent of the Internet.
